Some anatomy sketches of horses mainly looking at the legs and movement as that's what I find the hardest to get correct

fore leg and shoulder muscles while raised side view
horse muscles front view (legs became a bit short in this sketch)
horse shoulder and neck muscles side view (neck became a bit thick i think)
lots of different hoof angles

an ink sketch of my horse when he was little
After looking at the anatomy of the horse to improve understanding of the horse internally I decided to do some observational sketches of my horses legs to see if I now find it easier to get an accurate drawing in this area but as my horses are of the heavy horse type they have feather on there legs giving it an added difficulty to overcome.
the front leg of my one horse with the least amount of feather
Needs Improving - the hoof is raising up at the back to much and is too curved
- theres a harsh black line at the back of the knee standing out
Went well - quite accurate shape from the top of the leg to the knee
hind legs of my horse with the least amount of feather
Went well - the shape of the leg on the left I'm really happy about as hind legs tend to go badly
Needs Improving - at that angle attaching to the rest of the body looks wrong
- theres a solid black line around the whole drawing.... I have a habit of that
hind leg resting
Went Well - the upper leg to hock
Needs improving - the fetlock and hoof are a bit small
hind legs of my horse with a lot of feather
started of well, the fetlock and hoof needs more work but couldn't finish it as other horse interfered
quick sketch then worked into from memory of my horse with a titch again the hoof i think went a bit small
A bit of the point but ..
A funny thing happened when I went to go ride my horse. this huge dragonfly landed on his nose and his face was like 'help what is it' - so I had to try recreate the scene in my mind and sketch it because I found it too funny not to
I wanted to draw a horse with its nose on a persons hand so I tried to get a photo of this so I could then draw it with reference as I'm not good at hands (harder than i seems as holding the the camera while being in the photo and getting a good angle was some want difficult)
the hand turned out alright in the end the thumb is a bit wrong though. the horses nostrils are on the large side and the angle of the nose slightly wrong
I started to look at some full figure action poses using photos that I took of my horse messing around to help improve my drawing and understanding of the movement of horses.
Needs improving- horse isn't leaning as much as the photo taking some of the appearance of speed out
-shading lacks highlights taking the tonal range down
- missing shadow (how'd i miss that?)
Went well- the leg structure
a mix of pen and pencil
Needs improving- hoof shape and size various
slightly
-background in general
I like the pen and pencil mix despite it all has the
same bold edge something about it appeals to me
-the legs are on the thin side they need more bulk and muscle definition
- the mane needs more poof
-shoulders too big and head needs to be angled in more
this sketch didn't work to well as it didn't capture the sideways movement of the horse one reason being the head and neck are at the wrong angle and position
sketch of a horse that is angry looking at the body language and expression - head raised , ears back , tail swishing, moving feet ready for fight or flight
ink sketch of my friends horse being lunged
sketch based on my horse in his winter coat
pencil sketch of my horse wearing a double bridle
sketches off the top of my head of horses doing different frightened behaviour and some random pose that i couldn't help but draw e.g. horse sitting down
using images from different sources i did some sketches of some more rears, leaps and bounds
- i could add some shading in these sort of sketches
I decided to draw some tack as I have never drawn some before and it is an important part of breaking in a horse :- saddle, bridle, bit, head collar, lead rope, lunge line and whip
- I got the breaking saddle out and sketched it from different angles
- I no longer have the breaking bit so had to find an image of one
(left) from photos -breaking bit and a sketch of my horse wearing head collar and half bridle
(right) saddle on horses back and two other angles while placed on a box and then a tin of treacle (relevant trust )
sketches of saddle at various angles
(left) eggbutt jointed snaffle, head collar and bridle
(right) bridle on horse and half bridle over head collar on horse, close up of buckles and joins
Some colour try outs
started sketching things that happened when taming horse
LEFT: I tried to find some images of a horse that can cow kick but as only 1 in every 100 can cow kick there wasn't any reference so tried to create from my mind a still of this but couldn't quite get the angle to look right
(note : cow kick is kicking out with a back leg but forward and out to the side not back hence why it is called a cow kick as cows can't kick backwards)
RIGHT: sketched some different jumps that could be made out of a horse box
looked at some stables trying to get the prespective correct
ink vs water colour (black and white vs colour)
- the colour has a clearer depth and is more eye catching
