I will be making a sequential story based on a
real life event of taming a wild horse and gaining its trust.
This story will be aimed at young to teen
girls as lots of young girl’s dream of having a horse of their own, but as this can not always happen, they look for other ways of living there
dream such as playing computer games, playing with
toys or reading stories,
Here is a short synopsis of my story ….
In
this heart-warming tale a young girls dream to have a horse of her own finally
comes true, but when her mum brings home a untouched 18 month old colt to tame
she finds it hard not to show her disappointment . It’s nothing like what she
expected, how can that wild beast be tamed if you can’t get anywhere near it.
Her mum say’s everything will turn out alright as the horse has a “kind eye” however
discovering how to gain the horse’s trust maybe hard and dangerous at times, no
task is impossible as long as you can find the key to its heart….a more detailed look in to the story-
So within this story the young girl will have to learn the best ways to tame a horse, from her mother who’d trained many horses in her time
Certain keys events that happens in the story line are –
1-
the arrival when the horse first arrives it being out of
control causing much disappointment to the young girl
2-
training begins - so getting to touch and groom the horse and get the tack on
it without being kicked bitten or dragged around, so using little tricks like
putting treacle on the bit and a hot bran mash while being groomed.
3-
catch the horse while it in the paddock where it has room to
run away –and here is where a major
trust gaining event happens where the horse trys to jump the fence but fails getting his hoof stuck and needing to be cut free.
4- more training such as lunging and long reining
5-
another event that creates a difference is a change of name for the horse basically a new name a new start
6-
Breaking in and riding of the horse
the final book will be around A5 in size

What audience do you think this story appeals to
and why
-Young girls of school age (maybe year 5 to year 8?), because the storyline reminds me of books I used to read myself as a child.
-It is heartwarming and cute but at the same time thrilling with a sense of adventure. I think it will suit young to teen girls more as there isn't enough adventure for the lads lol
-teenage girls as its what they dream about happening having their own pony
- any age, relevant to anyone who horserides, is insipring and different
-young girls early teens or pre teen
-It seems it would appeal to younger kids and teens, as everyone at that age has dealt with with disappointments and obstacle.

Would you be put off by lots of text within a
sequential story – yes (l) -no (5)

Any other comments welcome
I think it would be a great book - I read a book about someone who bought a Exmoor and broke it themselves as a girl and I always dreamed I would do it one day - I think it was called my summer with Tommy

original proposal -
My objective for my final major project is to communicate the theme of establishing trust between horse and human, I will be doing this through using a sequence of images showing the taming and breaking in of a young horse which will be based on a real story of my horse when I first got him as a untouchable 18 month old colt. This sequence of images may form a storybook/graphic novel or be a select few images showing the main areas within the taming process. I will find out which way works better by looking at and experimenting the different ways of communicating the story and of different layouts. I don’t have a target audience but I would like it to be enjoyed by all ages with a slightly educational element being that the viewer gets to know about the taming and breaking process of a horse and of course people who are animal/ horse lovers will find it more appealing.
The one main thing that will cause a problem for me in this project is the involvement of people in my drawing as I am not confident at drawing them but I would really like to be able to create this story so this is a huge area that I will be trying to cover at an early stage in my project in order for it to work. I plan to do a lot of sketches of people and horse also interactions between them to increase my understanding further.
My motivation for doing this project is mainly come from my love of animals and the understanding and connection that I develop with them. My strongest connection is mainly with my dog and my horses but there are other animals as well. This connection impacts on my work as I have come to know their body language; emotions and reactions, helping me portray what I want to get across better.
An artist that has inspired me is Christian Slade who is a full time freelance artist who has been working on a woodland fantasy about a young girl named Ivy, and her Korgi called Sprout which is a silent graphic novel called “Korgi” which has developed from his strong connection with his two dogs penny and leo which are Corgi’s. As Korgi is a silent graphic novel the whole story is told through actions and facial expressions which I think will have a link to my work as horses can’t speak their entire communication is done through body language and expression.
A page from "Sprout pigs out" a Korgi short tale by Christian Slade
For my research project I thought it would be good to look at something that I am not very good at and I would benefit greatly from doing and the one thing that springs to mind is backgrounds – so I will start to look at some artists and different ways of drawing backgrounds.
